Tongariro  Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is heralded as the best one-day trek in New Zealand and is regarded as among the top ten single-day treks in the world.
Many who complete the 19.4-kilometer journey will tell you the climbs can be steep and the weather unpredictable, though worth it in every aspect. 

If you are walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing independently please note that this is a point to point hike, so a shuttle needs to be organised to get you to the start of the Crossing. The summer season runs from the end of October to the end of April. 

Alternatively you can consider the fully guided option as the guides will provide you with commentary and ensure you are properly fitted out for this hike. Most of our guests take between the 6 and 8 hours to complete the Crossing. During the winter months, May and October it is essential to book a guided tour.

Tongariro National Park Walking Options

There are so many more other amazing walks to be experienced for all fitness levels. The Old Coach Road, The Taranaki Falls Walk and the Waitonga Falls walks are only just 3 of the most popular walks in the park. As we have walked just about all the trails in the park, we can give you first hand advise on each of the walks. Apart from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, none of the short walks require any special hiking gear. Just ensure you have good walking shoes and dress for the weather conditions.

Mountain Biking 

Mountain Biking

There are many mountain biking tracks in the Ruapehu Region. Take a look at the grade 2 cycle trails like Old Coach Road Trail, Fishers Track, Marton Sash and Door track. Bike hire available from: National Park and Ohakune. The Old Coach Road Cycle Trail starts just a few hunderd meters from Tongariro Suites. So bring your own bikes and start cycling straight from your accommodation. Arrangements can be made to meet you in Ohakune or the end of the trail to bring you back to Horopito. 

The Timber Trail multi day cycle trail is also a great option to consider and stay with us before and after your trail.

Try New Zealand's highest guided alpine stand up paddle board adventure at 616 metres above sea level.This is a summer activity only but well worth experiencing even if you have never paddle boarded before. The lake is flat and after a little bit of tuition you will be fully guided around the lake. Enjoy the amazing views of the three volcanoes that Tongariro National Park is famous for when you paddle back across the lake. Combine this early morning trip with the Fishers Track cycle trail for a soft adventure day out.

Bridge to Nowhere 

Whanganui River Adventures to the Bridge of Nowhere

Take a 45 minute drive to Pipiriki to enjoy a jet boat ride to the famous Bridge to Nowhere. From the Whanganui River jetty, enjoy a 40 minute walk to the historic bridge. Return to Pipiriki by jet boat or paddle back down stream in a canoe.

Skiing 

Whakapapa and Turoa Ski fields

Tongariro Suites  is located just a short 30minutes drive to both ski fields car parks. Decide in the morning if you turn left or right for a days skiing or snowboarding. Not a skier, catch the SkyWaka to New Zealand's highest cafe Knoll Ridge.

Located on the edge of Tongariro National Park, in the middle of the Ruapehu Region, in the tiny village of Horopito, you will feel a thousand miles away from everywhere. However Ohakune, our nearest village has a supermarket and a great range of restaurants and take out options and is only a 10 minute drive away.


Every suite has a mountain view and the sunrise, sunset, rising of the moon and star gazing are just glorious from our location.

We are centrally located between both Turoa and Whakapapa Ski fields. The Tongariro Crossing and all other great walks in the national park are only a 30 minute drive away.


The Old Coach Cycle trail can be started at our doorstep and the Mountains to the Sea cycle trail runs past our side boundary.

Nightsky Cottage

The 5-Star fully self-contained Nightsky Cottage (our sister property) is set in 1 ha of private native manuka bush just a few minutes drive from Tongariro Suites.
