Meet Your Host
Hi, I’m Mandy
Tongariro Suites is more than a business to me — it’s my home, my passion and a place I feel incredibly lucky to share with our guests.
I discovered this beautiful property during Covid, at a time when the world had suddenly become very quiet.
There was something about this place that stayed with me.
The native gardens, the mountain, the stillness and the feeling of being completely surrounded by nature made an impression, and I eventually took a leap of faith and bought the property.
I didn’t know exactly what would come next, but I knew it was somewhere worth caring for.
Since then, Tongariro Suites has become a huge part of my life. What started as a new adventure has become something much deeper — a place I’m proud to call home and one that I genuinely love welcoming people to.

A Peaceful Place to Experience Ruapehu
Tucked Away in Horopito
One of the things that makes Tongariro Suites special is our location. We’re tucked away in the tiny settlement of Horopito, surrounded by native landscaping and views towards Mt Ruapehu.
From here you can experience beautiful sunrises and sunsets, watch the moon rise over the landscape and, on clear nights, enjoy wonderfully dark skies for stargazing. At the same time, we are centrally positioned for exploring the wider region.
Tongariro Suites is located between Ohakune and National Park Village, making it a convenient base for visiting both sides of Mt Ruapehu and exploring Tongariro National Park.
The property is also close to some of the region’s best walking and cycling experiences. The Old Coach Road cycle trail can be accessed from our doorstep, while the Mountains to Sea cycle route passes beside the property. Many of the walks and attractions throughout Tongariro National Park are within easy driving distance.
So you can spend the day exploring — then come back somewhere quiet, comfortable and peaceful.
Continuing a Family Story
Tongariro Suites has always been a family business, created with care from its earliest days.
The property was originally built and developed by Carel and Elsbeth, who have since retired.
They created something special here, and the warmth and personal hospitality they established is something I’m proud to continue.
My approach is simple:
I want you to feel at home from the moment you arrive.
That means providing a beautiful, comfortable place to stay, but also being here when you need advice, recommendations or a little local knowledge to help you make the most of your time in Ruapehu.
More Than Somewhere to Sleep
We know that for many guests, a trip to Ruapehu is about much more than accommodation.
You may be planning the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, heading out on one of the national park’s many other walks, cycling the Old Coach Road, spending time on Mt Ruapehu or simply looking for somewhere beautiful to escape for a few days.
That’s why we want Tongariro Suites to feel like your base for experiencing the region, rather than simply a room for the night.
We’re always happy to help with local recommendations and ideas for your stay.
From walks and cycling to places to eat and things to do when the mountain weather has other plans, local knowledge can make a big difference to your trip.

Your Home Base Between Ohakune & National Park Village
Living here means we experience the Ruapehu region throughout the seasons.
We understand that mountain weather can change, plans sometimes need to change with it, and there is much more to this area than any one famous walk.
That local perspective is something we love sharing with guests.
Whether you’d like ideas for walks, cycling, sightseeing, food or simply how to spend a slower day in the region, please ask.
Part of the joy of hosting is helping our guests discover places and experiences they might otherwise have missed.
